Northern Cyprus remains one of the Mediterranean's best kept holiday secrets. Comparatively quiet, and old-fashioned in the best of ways, the island is a treasure-trove of ancient history and natural beauty. Here, you can still find villages where time seems to have stood still. The Karpas Peninsula, running to the north-east tip of the island, offers thousands of acres of countryside where you are more likely to come across a herd of wild donkeys than a herd of people. Cyprus is famed for its beaches and in the north, you can still find miles of deserted sands. Crusader castles, magical harbours, Roman ruins, ancient abbeys...... they are all here waiting for you.
The position of Cyprus on major trading routes made it strategically important for centuries. The history and culture of the island bear testimony to the various races that have ruled it and each has left their mark. The Roman ruins of the city of Salamis, on the island's east coast, are breathtaking in their sheer size and the nearby town of Famagusta is dotted with relics and superb architecture. Moving inland to the centre of Cyprus, the capital city of Nicosia is a lively town with plenty of shopping opportunities, but also has some superb old buildings. To the northern coastline, the town of Kyrenia is famed for its magnificent harbour, though the tiny alleys of the Old Town also hold many secrets and the occasional bargain. Close by and sheltered in the Kyrenia mountains, the village of Bellapais was home for years to the author Lawrence Durrell. Today it is best known for its stunning abbey, but the restaurants nearby also have much to offer! Similarly close to Kyrenia, and higher in the mountains, the magnificent Saint Hilarion Castle is a crusader monument, and reputedly the inspiration for 'Sleeping Beauty'. The climb to its summit is as monumental as the building itself, but the reward is views that are simply breathtaking.
But together with its love of history, Northern Cyprus has embraced today's world as well. There is more than enough for the active visitor. For diving, the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean are home to a number of PADI certified centres. Experienced divers can partake in wreck and cave dives up to very advanced standards. All these centres also offer 'try-dives' and full courses. If you prefer to stay above the surface, there are a number of watersport centres, where you can try everything from banana boats, through sailing and surfing to water-skiing and jet-skis. To see the island from above, how about a session of paragliding? Or staying on dry-land, you will find walking and hiking tours for all abilities, quad-bike and jeep safaris and horse riding. There is even a full-sized go-karting track.
Feel like a lazy day? There are many boat cruises on offer, with everything from a few hours to a full day with lunch on board. And plenty of opportunities for swimming or snorkeling. Don't forget the shopping either! Northern Cyprus has everything you could dream of to satisfy the need for some retail therapy - and being outside the Euro, prices are very reasonable. To finish off that perfect day, an evening meal is a must. And when it comes to eating out, Northern Cyprus offers an almost bewildering choice. From the simplest kebab shop to international-style restaurants, Cypriots share a passion for good food and fresh ingredients and meals here are excellent value. You really can find something to suit and taste and any wallet!
